Only thirty minutes from Vejer de la Frontera, it is one of the oldest towns in Europe, with an old quarter that is threaded with narrow, winding streets filled with Moorish art and architecture. The town has many watchtowers from the days when the local merchants kept a look out for their ships coming into harbour.  It's cathedral and tower are well worth a visit for great views of the city.  There is a friendly welcome from the locals, in a safe and warm atmosphere along with great seafood restaurants.

Jerez horses

Horses, Sherry and Flamenco are at the heart of this area and a 45 minute drive from Vejer takes you to Jerez de la Frontera, the centre for Sherry production in the region.  Most sherry houses ( bodegas) offer daily tours and sample the product.  Jerez is also home to the Royal Andalusian School Of Equestrian with its world famous white Andalusian horses.

Andalucia's largest city and capital, Seville has a large historic quarter, full of magnificent churches including La Giralda, convents, monuments and Moorish buildings and of course the Alcazar. It has lots of tapas bars and a buzzing nightlife. Seville is reached from Vejer in less than 2 hours.

Many of the principal sights can be found within or very the near the city centre and can be reached on foot.

Arcos de la Frontera church

ARCOS de la Frontera

About an hour and quarter from Vejer, the old town sits at the highest point of the cliffs, with streets of white-washed homes cascading down the ridge line.  Park at the foot of the old town and walk up the hill and visit the churches and explore the architecture that harks back to the Moorish occupation in the early Middle Ages.  Enjoy a drink overlooking the cliffs from the terrace CafĂ© within the Parador in the main square.

Only an hour away and you can step back into Britain and enjoy great value drink and goods while taking in the sites such as the famous Barbery apes, marina, cable car and of course the rock itself.

Medina Sidonia

Ancient hill-top town originally settled by the Phoenicians.  The Romans fortified the hilltop and it later became an important Moorish town - the castle ruins at the top of the hill give a panoramic view over the surrounding countryside.  The main square - the Plaza Espana is one of the most attractive in the region and has many restaurants and cafes.   There is a new road linking Vejer with Medina Sidonia making it only a 20 minute drive away.

Tarifa plaza

Enjoy standing on the causeway with the Mediterranean on one side and the Atlantic on the other.  Tarifa has great views of North Africa and a day trip to Tangier is only 30 minutes away by fast Catamaran.  Known as the windsurfing capital of Europe
